Teen Reading Buddies and Summer Event Assistants Needed this Summer!

Our successful Reading Buddies program will return IN PERSON this summer and we need teen volunteers. The Reading Buddy program pairs young readers going into first and second grade with teen volunteers for a half hour of reading encouragement, games and learning activities. The goal is to make reading fun; this is not a tutoring session.

Reading Buddies takes place every Monday with sessions scheduled between 11-2.  There will be a mandatory, in person, orientation for all Reading Buddy volunteers on June 2 from 1-3.  You must attend that orientation in order to volunteer as a Reading Buddy.

The Library needs Summer Event Assistant volunteers to help with our in person reading programs.  We are now accepting applications for those shifts.  We will be contacting event assistant volunteer applicants in the middle of May to get you signed up for those volunteer opportunities.

Please submit your volunteer application online at https://www.dscl.org/faqs/teen-volunteers/ or stop by the library to pick up your teen volunteer application. You will be contacted the first of May to be added to the Reading Buddy teen volunteer list, because we do have limited volunteer slots for this program.

Mother's Day Sugar Gram Challenge!

This Mother’s Day stop by the Library and take a guess at how many grams of sugar are in our jar of M&M’s. The closest guess will win the jar for their mother! All participants will be entered into a separate drawing for a Kindle Fire.

*If you or a family member have already won a Kindle Fire you will not be eligible to win the device but you can still participate in the candy portion of the challenge.

*New Hybrid Program Options

Continuing into May we are offering SOME of our existing programs for both ZOOM and IN-PERSON participation. This means we will run these programs in person at the library while simultaneously broadcasting via ZOOM. Watch program descriptions to see if this option is available for your program of interest. The IN-PERSON options will offer limited spaces and will require registration on a weekly basis (if a recurring program).
These spaces will be offered on a first come (first to register) first serve basis. The Zoom option will have a separate registration link.

Keep in mind the In-House option could be cancelled at any time depending on current events and health recommendations. The library currently does not require masks, it is left up to the individual.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early reading program which encourages parents and caregivers to provide early learning experiences by reading aloud with their children ages birth to five. 1,000 Books sounds like a huge goal,
but this isn’t a race, you have until your child enters kindergarten to reach 1,000 books. Select books of interest and simply read aloud together. And yes, books read during storytime do count as do those “read it to me again and again” books.

Families are reminded of the special rewards waiting for them as each of the 100 book milestones are reached. Simply visit the library periodically with your child and ask for their reading rewards. When the 1,000 Book Goal is reached, your young reader receives a very special reward and a 1,000 Book Leaf they may add to the library’s Reading Tree!

It is simple and easy to register and track books as you read together
